Irvine, California‑based Trilogy Financial launched Trilogy Tax & Consulting, an affiliated company that will provide tax preparation and consulting services for its clients.
Trilogy said the affiliate would help its advisors connect clients with tax professionals, identify tax planning opportunities and integrate tax mitigation strategies into financial plans. The firm said the services are intended for individual, family and business‑owner clients.
“We are excited to continue building out our capabilities available through our affiliated businesses with the addition of our new tax and consulting offering,” said Jeff Motske, Co‑Founder, President and CEO of Trilogy Financial. “As clients’ financial lives become increasingly complex, it is important to provide services beyond traditional investment management.”
Founded in 1999, Trilogy has 10 regional offices and more than $5 billion in advisory and brokerage assets.
In March 2024, Trilogy announced an investment by Toronto‑based private equity firm Peloton Capital Management.

Trilogy Capital, a $5 billion wealth manager based in Irvine, Calif., is acquiring Mountain Capital Investment Advisors, a $1 billion registered investment advisor firm in Westminster, Colo.
Trilogy says the deal is its largest acquisition of the year and will establish its 11th office location and its second in Colorado.
Mountain Capital was founded in 2011 by Brandt Burns, a former U.S. Marine and airline pilot who says that joining Trilogy will provide his team of advisors with additional resources to improve their service model while preserving much of their operating model.
“We will retain our brand and unique position in the marketplace, and our leadership team, advisors, and staff will remain intact, so client disruption should be minimal,” he says. “This important move for our firm will not replace what we’ve built—it will strengthen it.”
In addition to Burns, other members of Mountain Capital have worked as pilots or in other roles in the aviation industry, and it has a niche serving clients who work in that sector. Brandt’s wife, Mountain Capital co-founder Michelle Burns, spent 14 years as a senior manager for United Airlines. At Mountain Capital, she led development of a specialized tax-preparation service designed for pilots and other aviation-industry professionals. Trilogy says that an affiliated company, Trilogy Tax & Consulting, will absorb Mountain Capital’s tax service.

Trilogy Capital, the wealth management firm headquartered in Irvine, California, announced the acquisition of Westminster, Colorado-based Mountain Capital. Mountain Capital had over $1 billion in total client assets. The acquisition represents Trilogy’s largest deal of the year and its second Colorado location.
“Mountain Capital is a perfect fit for Trilogy and demonstrates our commitment to intelligent inorganic growth,” said Jeff Motske, Co-Founder, President and CEO of Trilogy. “Mountain Capital shares our commitment to long-term client relationships, fiduciary advice, and thoughtful financial planning, so the cultural fit is exceptional. We are very excited to be able to attract high-caliber people to Trilogy.”
Mountain Capital was founded in 2011 by U.S. Marine Corps veteran and former airline pilot Brandt Burns, its CEO. The firm serves individuals, families and small businesses, with a focus on aviation professionals. Its advisors include current and former pilots, airline leaders and other industry experts. Trilogy said the advisors’ aviation experience informs the financial guidance they provide.
According to Trilogy, Mountain Capital will retain its brand, leadership team, advisors and staff, and client disruption should be minimal.
“Partnering with Trilogy allows us to maintain our firm’s personalized service and expertise, while enhancing additional offerings that matter most to our clients,” said Burns. “This important move for our firm will not replace what we’ve built. It will strengthen it.”

Private equity-backed hybrid RIA Trilogy Financial Services has acquired a $1bn shop with a niche serving pilots and aviation professionals.
Trilogy said Thursday it has snapped up Mountain Capital Investment Advisors, located in Westminster in Colorado’s Denver-Boulder corridor. The terms of the transaction, which marks Irvine, Calif.-based Trilogy’s largest acquisition of the year, were not disclosed.
Mountain Capital is led by chief executive Brandt Burns and vice president Michelle Burns, a husband-and-wife duo who co-founded the firm in 2011 alongside founder emeritus Robert Loesch. Brandt Burns is a US Marine Corps veteran who previously worked as an advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney for more than a decade. Before that, he was a commercial pilot at the now-defunct regional airline Atlantic Coast Airlines (later known as Independence Air). Michelle Burns worked for United Airlines for 14 years.
The firm provides financial planning to individual, family and small business clients with a focus on people involved in the aviation industry. It also offers tax preparation services and consulting services for pilots and airline professionals.
Brandt Burns stated that the deal allows Mountain Capital to retain its brand, leadership team, advisors and staff. The company will become Trilogy’s eleventh office and second location in Colorado.
